Background Information
According to Greek and Roman mythology Orpheus was a musician/poet renowned for his infamous journey to the underworld. He was the son of Apollo and muse Calliope. Orpheus was given a golden lyre and was taught how to play and sing on it. He soon became well known for his musical talents and Jason of the Argonauts asked for his assistance on his journey. He needed to pass the Sirens and Orpheus music was the only thing to keep the crew from being drawn in by their voices. Later on he met a nymph who he fell in love with. He soon arranged for their marriage.
Poor Orpheus
On their wedding day Eurydice stepped on a viper. Quickly the venom killed her. Orpheus was shocked when he heard this news and grief stricken. He journeyed to the underworld where he played a beautiful song for Pluto and Persephone. They were moved by his music and allowed him to take Eurydice from the underworld but only if on the way back he would not look back at her until they returned to the surface. Orpheus however could not resist himself and turned around. Eurydice was left in the underworld and Orpheus did not live happily ever after. According to some sources he was greeted by Ciconian women who were angry at being rejected, and so beat him up. Orpheus did not want to live and was defenseless so he died.
