The Roman Underworld according to ancient writings and inscriptions was the collection of vessels for all beings who had passed away. It was ruled over by the Roman god of death Pluto, known as Hades in greek mythology. The underworld, unlike hell, did not have a negative connotation to it as it was the only dwelling place Romans believed in. Instead they believed in the idea that there were five levels to the underworld each holding various types of people/beasts.
Parts of the underworld
Romans thought the underworld was divided into many parts. One region was known as the region of waters. This is the region where all had to cross the river Styx. Another region was known as the Fields of Punishment where those who committed crimes against the gods were punished. Tartarus, the deepest region was where titans and other beasts were locked away. Finally there was the region of happiness and joy, Elysium where good citizens and brave soldiers went to.
